Hi,

I'm running ArchLinux with 2.6.21-viper kernel, on x86_64, is there any way you plan on releasing the sources for your drivers? I'd happily test them, not everyone runs ubuntu you know :/

What are the reasons for releasing binary only drivers anyway? Could you please point to some explanation or tell us here the reasons behind not releasing (yet? ;)) the sources for this drivers so everyone who runs a custom kernel or a different distro than ubuntu could use this great piece of work?

EDIT: okay so now I have read the FAQ and it seems you have chose the bastard way and bleed us dry for whatever little penny we got. 200Euro for driver compilation? Are you nuts?

Here, I understand you can recieve some money for the work done, that's understandable totally. But it's already done isn't it? So why not help others? I can understand fair and square that carrying the name on your work etc might not be enough to pay them bills, ofcourse, but then again having your name out there is value at that as well as it would give you a possibility to be seen by companies who're on the look-out for programmers/developers.

Moving right along in that direction, perhaphs you could convince sonix to pay you money for this driver? Enough money to perhaphs make this driver GPL? I doubt they will but then again you never know ;) Perhaphs had you given them the sources or the like, that could work. Nonetheless, it's worth a shot I guess had you not done it yet to contact them and see what they have to say about it. The biggest problem as I know it with opensource drivers is the support, how a new kernel breaks things etc, as it seems it's a long-term project that way. The upside of that is had you made it opensource, I'm pretty sure people out there might help out and pick off of where you might've left of, and perhaphs even improve the work.

I didn't buy a laptop for the camera, but now that it's there and knowing that there is a driver out there only to find out someone decides to support one distro more than another, well, it's just not a great feeling to be honest.

Perhaphs make some more cry about it. I will definetly post a link to this place and this driver on notebookreview forums and other notebook forums (drop me a line if you mind). If it works, people maybe will use it - at that, you might concider building a x86_64 ubuntu version too if that's the only distro you plan on supporting now.

Would kind of suck tho had enough people bought enough copies of it so you'd finally decide eventually oh okay let's make it opensource. I'd _definetly_ feel screwed had I been one of those who paid and saw things run that way.

Otherwise, damnit, how much money do you want for this? 200 is quite a sum as I can see it ;) That's an average months pay for where I come from. Good luck selling that. A supported with other drivers camera is like 10-15 euros, 50-60 at best.

Personally, I would much rather donate money to an open source project of yours rather than pay for your binary. Make it open source and I'm pretty sure money will flow your way anyway; keep it binary only and all you can do is wait for some customer to pay you for whatever time you already wasted.

That's just my drop in the ocean, no means to offend anyone so keep it steady out there;)
