Re: ALi USB2 M5603C camera support Somebody has linked to this thread from:
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AsusA6BG16E-RWDL and we'd like to get stuff working out-of-the-box for Ubuntu if possible. If ALi has not provided support I don't think there should be any restrictions on releasing this in a useful format that everyone else can hack on. With the restrictions of an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) there might be reasons for being tied and unable to release the source. luca, Could you explain in a bit more detail why you aren't happy with releasing the source at the present moment? On the front page, I found a line saying: Quote: COMPANIES MAY CONTACT THE AUTHOR FOR ANY HARDWARE SUPPORT UNDER LINUX Does that mean you are trying to generate a revenue-stream in exchange for releasing source-code? Is it unlikely that the source will be spread more widely until that has been the case. At the moment, for distributions like Ubuntu, code that is not in the mainline kernel is a no-no because of the idea of long-term supportability and binary-only are an even bigger problem. The next Ubuntu release is in 6months; is there anything the users with this laptop can do to help you in making a shippable driver a possibility within that timeframe? Many Thanks for the work you've done! Paul |
